It is mostly used to characterize the viscosity-temperature behavior of lubricating oils. At transition from reservoir to capillary (and up to some degree also within the capillary) however, the flow is not yet fully developed, but is accelerated. The viscosity index ( VI) is an arbitrary, unit-less measure of a fluids change in viscosity relative to temperature change.
